Ag. Senior Principal State Attorney

In order to improve effectiveness and efficiency in the handling, investigations management and prosecutions in fraud cases, the DPP has set up the Anti-Fraud Unit. The Unit was set up the beginning of 2004 at the Headquarters and works closely with the National Anti-Fraud Squad of the CID Headquarters from early stages during investigations of cases of embezzlement, causing financial loss, false accounting, abuse of office, corruption, forgery and obtaining money by false pretences involving public offices and other organizations.

The Unit is also seeking to work closely with the complaining organizations during investigations and trial to ensure that all evidence required is obtained and that hearings start quickly in court and are conducted smoothly, with a view that cases quickly get to their conclusion in courts. Efforts will be made through good coordination, communication and collaboration to ensure that all parties to the case, including complainants, witnesses and investigators are kept in the know of their roles, case stages and nature of proceedings.

Our goal is to attain a quicker and more successful conclusion of cases based on the most appropriate charges, accused persons and evidence. Where appropriate, cases will be handled under special criminal sessions.

The Unit is still small but its capacity will continue being built for the Headquarters and then it will be rolled out. It is currently staffed with a few lawyers whose training and skills have been enhanced by way of attachment to the UK Serious Fraud Office and the Directorate of Special Operations (Scorpions) of the National Prosecuting authority of South Africa. They have also attended several training workshops in the area of fraud.

We need the cooperation of all stakeholders including the public for better service delivery.
