Departments

The Directorate is divided into two main functional areas under the auspices and direction of the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as follows;

Division of Management Support Services

The main role of this division which is headed by a Deputy Director and is also the Accounting Officer is to provide logistical, administrative and other support services essential for the efficient and effective operations of the Directorate. Under this division there are 3 departments; Field Operations/International Affairs; Records, Information and Computer Services, and Administration and Finance.

The Department of Field Operations and International Affairs has 2 functional units, International Affairs and Field Operations. The main role of this department is to handle international and extraterritorial issues and crime as well as coordinate and ensure adequate facilitation and proper operations of the field offices.

The Department of Documentation, Information and Computer Services is an integration of the specialised areas of registry, computer based information systems, documentation centre, library and resource centre under one umbrella.
The main objective of the department is to properly manage, secure and safeguard information systems so as to ensure accuracy and authenticity of information, documents and records produced as well as safe and easy accessibility by authorized users.

The 3 specialised units are headed by specialists in the respective areas.
  1. The Resource Centre and Library Services Unit provides multipurpose services under common leadership. Its headed by a Principal Information or Documentation Scientist. Under the principal there are two sections namely, the documentation section and the library section. The unit provides strategic information for internal, Government and public references and a Documentation repository. The Documentation section is headed by a Senior Documentation Officer while the library section is headed by a librarian.
  2. The Computer Services and Network Unit safeguards and maintains the computer facilities, provides and ensures quality of computer operations and services in the entire Directorate. The unit is comprised of a Principal Systems Administrator, Systems Administrators and Data Entry clerks.
  3. The Registry Services Unit is headed by a Senior Records Officer. The registry manages all the records of the Directorate.

The Department of Administration and Finance which department combines the main functional areas of general administration, accounts, human resources and Estates management under the headship of the Under Secretary.

The main role of this Department it to secure and provide adequate facilities and resources, their frugal management as well as providing effective administration services to support the operations of the DPP and the Directorate. The Under Secretary is assisted by the following in their respective specialised areas;

Administration –   Principal Assistant Secretary
Personnel –   Principal Personnel Officer
Accounts –   Principal Accountant
Estates –   Senior Estates Officer


Division of Prosecution and Quality Assurance

The main role of this division is to efficiently manage and advise on handling of all prosecution of criminal cases as well as to inspect, enforce and ensure attainment of the established performance standards and targets for effective Public Prosecutions as required by the management, the public and in accordance with Article 120 of the Constitution. This division is composed of 2 departments namely Public Prosecutions and Inspection and Quality Assurance.

The role of the Department of Public Prosecutions is for the expeditious, efficient and effective handling and management of prosecutions of criminal cases. The general case work unit is an integral part of the Department of Public Prosecutions and is headed by a Senior Principal State Attorney. The role of the Department of Quality Assurance is to inspect and ensure effective and quality public prosecutions as well as advise on change and introduction of specific laws to cope with the changing environment in the criminal and crime world.
